Round 1 Recap: Candy Scar, Frame by Frame
Every camera cut, every lyric, every glance between Mizi and Sua in Zombie Stage Round 1 — annotated with fan-verified timestamps and cultural notes.
This is a shot-by-shot recap of Zombie Stage Round 1, keyed to the official YouTube timestamps. If you have not yet watched it, do — this reads much better with the episode paused next to it.
Cold open
The episode opens on a wide shot of the arena, empty. The camera dollies past an “on-air” sign in the arena’s cold cyan (#22d3ee). VIVINOS has confirmed on their community tab that the sign was inspired by 1980s Korean television broadcast idents — a nod to the arena’s diegetic status as a broadcast, not a private event.
At 00:08 we cut to the dressing room door. It opens once, revealing the room in low-key lighting, and then closes as Mizi steps out of frame. This is the only pre-credits shot of Mizi in the entire episode.
The Dressing Room
The song The Dressing Room begins over a montage of Mizi being restored — makeup applied, hair dyed, her signature pink refreshed. The lyric “I paint colour onto my ruined face” is layered exactly on the shot of a makeup artist applying blush to Mizi’s already-grey cheek.
At 00:56 Sua enters the same dressing room. The frame composition here is deliberately symmetrical — VIVINOS has used this framing in every Round 1 across every series to visually equalize the two performers before the duel.
The pivotal line of the song (“Only inside the dressing room are we one”) plays over a shot of both girls staring into the same mirror. This is the first time in either series that Mizi and Sua share a reflection.
Candy Scar
Candy Scar opens with Mizi’s line “A sweet scar is calling my name” at 02:12. The stage is bathed in her signature #f472b6. Sua’s answer at 02:34 (“Your gaze pierces right through my heart”) drops the stage into her #818cf8 — the two colors intercut in a rhythm that maps exactly to the vocal handover.
The chorus at 03:04 (“Sweet wound — candy scar”) is the first unison line. The camera pulls back to reveal, for the first time, the audience: rows of human aristocrats in white, applauding on the beat. This is Zombie Stage’s most quietly horrifying image — the applause is not for the song, it is for the fact that Sua is dead and singing anyway.

The bridge
The bridge is the emotional pivot of the entire episode. Mizi sings “We used to be one” (우리는 하나였는데). Sua answers with the question the AU is built around: “Why must we tear each other apart on this stage?”
At 04:02, both characters break eye contact with the camera and lock eyes with each other for the first time. This is the moment Sua’s design changes subtly on-screen — her irises regain a hint of their original indigo saturation. It is a two-second shot. VIVINOS has confirmed this was hand-animated frame by frame rather than tweened.
The walk-off
Sua “loses” at 05:34 — she takes a knee at the end of her last verse. In Alien Stage this is when a losing performer would be executed. In Zombie Stage she stands back up.
The final 30 seconds are silent. Sua walks off-stage on her own feet. Mizi remains centre-stage as the lights dim. The audience applauds throughout, unchanged. The last shot is a lingering wide of the dressing room door — the same door that opened the episode — swinging open a second time, framed empty.
Easter eggs
A curated list of the details worth rewatching for:
- 00:14 — the on-air sign reflects a silhouette that fan consensus identifies as Isaac in a director’s headset.
- 02:41 — Till is visible in the front row of the audience in his Alien Stage jacket. Two more Till frames appear at 03:12 and 04:47.
- 03:58 — the arena’s lighting rig includes a single #facc15 (Ivan’s colour) fixture that is dark in this episode. Widely read as a Round 2 preview.
- 05:12 — the calligraphy on Sua’s dressing table reads “다시 만나자” (see you again). This is the exact phrase used at Sua’s funeral in the original Alien Stage Round 1.
- 06:04 — the credits roll to a piano-only reprise of The Dressing Room. This reprise is not on the official OST but has been uploaded by fans as an extract.
The next round has not been dated. Until then, we are all rewatching this one. If this recap missed a detail, mail it to hello@zombiestage.com — verified additions get credited.
Frequently asked
How long is Zombie Stage Round 1? +
The full episode runs 06:12. Candy Scar accounts for the middle three and a half minutes.
Who wins Round 1? +
Mizi wins in the sense that she is the last one standing at the end of the duel. But because Sua is already dead, "winning" no longer means what it did in Alien Stage — Sua walks off on her own feet.
Is Till really in the audience? +
Yes. Three separate crowd-shot frames feature Till in his Alien Stage jacket. VIVINOS confirmed this in a post-release community post.
